Marty Gras Party
The day before the beginning of Lent has been has been variously known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Fastnacht Day and so on. To use up all the fat (grease, oil, lard, shortening, etc.) before the Lenten fast, the day was celebrated by eating donuts or pancakes or other traditional foods, and with activities such as parades and parties. At Mt. Olive this year we are are doing something new and different, a Marty Gras Party, the name coming from combining Mardi Gras with Martin “Marty” Luther. The date is Febraury 17 with the time to be announced. We will have a covered dish dinner accentuating our German Reformation heritage and featuring Sauerbratten (sour beef) and dumplings.
The solemn season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18. There will be a Divine Service at Mt. Olive at 7:00 pm that day with the Imposition of Ashes. On Wednesday evenings in Lent there will be a study and prayer service at 7:00 pm each week. The evening begins with a two-person “readers' theater” drama imagining an ongoing conversation between Jesus and Satan. The play will be followed by Bible-based discussion and then various forms of Christian prayer and hymn singing.
